Most Active Scanner

Volume is attention. Most-active lists tell you where retail flow and institutional positioning are concentrating today — different from top gainers (movement) or 52-week high (breakout). This scanner ranks by session volume live.

§03 // EDITORIAL_NOTES

Editorial notes

Volume is attention. The most-active list tells you where retail flow and institutional positioning are concentrating today, and that's distinct from what top-gainers or 52-week-high tells you. Top-gainers ranks by movement. Most-active ranks by raw shares traded. The two surface different stocks.

A typical session opens with SPY, QQQ, and the major mega-cap names dominating the most-active list. That's normal index flow. The signal lives in what shows up alongside the usual suspects. When a name that isn't typically in the top 20 by volume suddenly appears, something is happening. Often it's news. Sometimes it's a sector rotation working its way through the tape. Occasionally it's a short-squeeze mechanical setup building before the price move shows up on a chart.

What we filter on. Sort by session volume descending, optional price filter at $1 or $5 to exclude microcap noise, optional ETF exclusion toggle to see individual stocks instead of SPY and QQQ stacking the top of the list. Live refresh so rankings shift through the session.

How traders use this. Combining most-active with the news-recency badge surfaces the why immediately. A name in the top 10 by volume with a fresh headline is the trade. A name in the top 10 by volume with no headline is either index flow, an institutional rebalance, or something brewing that hasn't hit the wire yet. Both are worth watching, for different reasons.

The most-active scanner pairs well with two other Tapeboard surfaces. The large-prints scanner surfaces stocks with unusually concentrated per-trade volume, a rough proxy for size-driven activity that often correlates with most-active rotation on mid-cap names. The high-vol/OI scanner flags options strikes where volume is running significantly above open interest, suggesting new positioning ahead of a catalyst. When a ticker is unusually active across all three signals, that confluence is worth investigating further.

Tapeboard streams session volume live, not on a delay, so the list reflects the tape as it actually is, not as it was 30 seconds ago. Click-through to the full research pane on every row.

Tape awareness. When a stock that isn't typically in the most-active list suddenly appears, something is happening — often news or a rotation. Combining most-active with the news-recency badge surfaces the 'why' immediately.
