Top gainers is the first scanner most day traders open in the morning. It answers the simplest question in trading: what's going on today? In under a minute you have a read on which sectors are rotating, which catalysts hit overnight, which themes the tape is willing to pay for. That orientation is worth more than any single setup.
What separates a useful top-gainers list from a useless one is the volume filter. Yahoo Finance and Finviz will happily show you a $0.04 stock up 200% on 10,000 shares of after-hours retail flow. That's not a tradeable name. The Tapeboard top-gainers scanner ships a default minimum daily volume floor, typically 500,000 shares, and a minimum price filter at $1 or higher. Both are configurable for traders who want to fish in shallower water, but the defaults strip out the illiquid noise that makes the standard top-gainers feeds nearly useless for actual trading.
What we sort on. Price change percent descending, biggest gainers first. Live refresh as the session progresses, so the rankings shift in real time. News-recency badge on each row flags whether a fresh headline triggered the move or it's an extension of an older catalyst.
How traders use this. Three modes. Morning prep: scan top gainers between 8 AM and 9:30 ET to build the day's watchlist. Continuation hunting: re-scan at 11 AM and 2 PM to catch names that ran in the morning, consolidated, and are starting a second leg. Failed-mover hunting: late-day scan at 3 PM to catch names that gapped up, ran, then started rolling over for the closing-hour fade trade.
Pair top-gainers with the news-recency badge and the float filter to separate real catalysts from index-driven noise. A name running 12% on a clean catalyst with sub-50M float is the setup the scanner is built for. A name running 6% with no headline and 800M float is probably index flow and not a high-edge trade.
