Unusual Volume Scanner

The single most reliable early signal that something is happening in a stock is volume — before the price move, before the news wire, before the chat-room alert. This scanner streams names trading at 2x+ their 10-day average volume so you catch the setup forming, not completing.

§03 // EDITORIAL_NOTES

Editorial notes

Volume precedes price. That's the lesson every trader who survives more than two years internalizes, and it's why the unusual-volume scanner sits at the top of most professional watchlist routines. Before a stock breaks out, before the news wire prints, before the chat-room alert fires, volume is moving. Institutional accumulation and distribution show up in the tape 10 to 30 minutes ahead of the chart on mid-cap and large-cap names. On small-caps the signal is even earlier and even louder.

Relative Volume, RVOL, is the metric. The math is simple: today's volume divided by the 10-day average for the same time of day. An RVOL of 2 means the stock is trading at twice its normal pace. RVOL of 5 is the level where something is clearly happening. RVOL above 10 is rare and almost always tied to a hard catalyst.

What we filter on. RVOL above 2x at scan time, price filter to exclude illiquid tickers under $1, optional gap and float filters layered on top, sorted by RVOL descending so the biggest anomalies surface first. Sector and float exclusions are available for traders who want to focus their universe.

Why this scanner matters more than top-gainers. Top-gainers tells you what already moved. Unusual volume tells you what's about to move, or what's distributing into a move that's about to fail. The two answer different questions. A stock up 8% on average volume is mostly noise. A stock up 2% on 5x volume is a position someone is building.

Edge cases worth knowing. ETF rebalancing fires this scanner on the underlying index components and most of those flag as noise. Earnings days fire it across an entire sector. Index inclusion or exclusion announcements produce the cleanest unusual-volume signals because the flow is mechanical and predictable. Reading the catalyst before sizing the trade is the routine.

Tapeboard streams this in real time. Rows update as prints land, not on a 10-second refresh delay. Click any ticker for the full research pane: chart, Level 2 book, time and sales, recent filings, insider activity, news recency.

Early-stage detection. Unusual volume often leads price by 10-30 minutes on mid-cap and large-cap names — institutional accumulation or distribution shows in the tape before the chart. For small-caps, unusual volume is the leading signal for low-float runners.
