Morning Tape

The Morning Tape is Tapeboard's curated pre-open dashboard — a single-shot, AI-summarized pane covering overnight news, pre-market movers, the S&P futures tape, key economic releases for the day ahead, and the top squeeze candidates. Lands live at 5 AM ET daily during the trading week — a 90-second skim before the open.

The Morning Tape is one of the most AI-forward surfaces on Tapeboard. While The Dashboard is the live trading session view, the Morning Tape is the pre-open reading — rendered fresh every market morning at 5 AM ET, written by a customer-trained model that has read overnight news, the pre-market scanner, the day's economic calendar, and your own overnight squeeze leaderboard. It's a 90-second read that gets you to the open with the same context as you'd have if you'd spent an hour scrolling at 4 AM.

What it is

Morning Tape — pre-open pane showing overnight news summary, pre-market top movers, today's economic releases, the top squeeze candidate of the day, and the S&P futures overnight detailed table
Morning Tape — pre-open pane showing overnight news summary, pre-market top movers, today's economic releases, the top squeeze candidate of the day, and the S&P futures overnight detailed table

A single paradigm pane at /morning-tape (or the morning-tape panel on the Dashboard) that symmetrically composes:

  • Overnight news summary — the prior-12-hour news cycle, pre-summarized by AI into bullet categories (M&A, earnings, economic, macro)
  • Pre-market top movers — top 5 gainers and 3 losers from the scanner's pre-market-gap-up / pre-market-gap-down preset
  • Today's economic releases — pulled from the Economic Calendar, top 5 by market-moving
  • Top squeeze candidate of the day — the #1 ticker from the Squeeze Leaderboard at 5 AM ET (this is the pre-open source-of-truth; it may change by 9:30 AM if material overnight news shifts scores)
  • S&P futures overnight — the S&P futures price + percentage change from prior close
  • Today's pre-market gaper — the pre-market gap (whatever logged the most direction)

When to use it

  • 5-9 AM ET — the pre-open window. This is the natural consumer surface for the Morning Tape. One page load gives you 90 seconds of reading.
  • Don't use it intra-session — the Morning Tape is statically rendered at 5 AM ET and refreshed on each hard refresh, but it's NOT the live trading dashboard. Intra-session, use the Dashboard (⌘1) or Scanner (⌘2).
  • Cross-reference — the Morning Tape's squeeze candidate + the scanner's high-short-interest-squeeze preset are the same data source viewed from different angles.

Open it

  • Path: /morning-tape (in the MARKETS sidebar or the Morning Tape panel on the Dashboard)
  • Auto-rendered page: rendered fresh daily at 5 AM ET by the morning-tape precompute cron, cached in KV for the trading day
  • Mobile: fully responsive pre-open pane

How it works

The Morning Tape is precomputed once at 5 AM ET (the morning-tape cron). It pulls six data sources into a single pane:

  1. News overnight — last 12 hours of news, AI-summarized into the 5 most market-moving categories. Summaries are written at 5 AM ET against prior-overnight news; subsequent pre-market news is NOT included in the Tape but is on the News surface.
  2. Pre-market scanner — the same scanner data you'd see on the Scanner page sets the pre-market-gap-up / gap-down preset, sorted by gap.
  3. Economic calendar — the Calendar surface's next 24 hours, sorted by market-moving (the Wage & CPI data often drives 60s of volatility at 8:30 ET).
  4. Squeeze Leaderboard — at pre-open time, the squeeze cron hits squeeze-recompute. The Tape's top squeeze ticker is the #1 from that recompute.
  5. S&P futures overnight — the S&P futures overnight price (last + percent).
  6. Earnings calendar — earnings released today.

The writing is all AI-upstream but is careful to credit Tapeboard's scanner as the source of the calls — "Tapeboard's scanner has XUP topping the pre-market gap leaderboard" — vs the model predicting from vibes.

Pro tips

  1. Cross-read the squeeze candidate with the News surface's overnight-Top ticker. Both surfaces independently generate a top-ticker call. If they agree, that increases conviction. If they disagree, the News one is the catalyst-aware call.
  2. The economic releases are usually what moves the open. Even on slow mornings. The 8:30 AM ET releases — CPI, GDP, Jobless Claims — are flagged in the Morning Tape's "Today's Economic Releases" section.
  3. Don't sit trades on the squeeze call. The Tape's squeeze candidate is a setup-state snapshot at 5 AM ET — by 9:30 the score may have updated with news the pre-open cron didn't have. Verify against the live Squeeze Scanner before taking action.
  4. Use the subscribe option. Email subscribe to the Morning Tape sends the same pane via 7 AM ET email — arrive at the trading desk with the pre-open read already in your inbox.
  • Dashboard (⌘1) — the live trading session view; the Morning Tape panel embeds the same content on the dashboard
  • News — the live news surface where mid-session news lands
  • Scanner (⌘2) — the live scanner where pre-market gap-up and gap-down presets are largely new-day (refreshed live, unlike the Tape's 5 AM snapshot)
  • Short Squeeze Scanner — the underlying source for the Tape's top squeeze candidate
  • AI History — yesterday's morning-tape summaries are preserved in the AI history page rail
