News

News is Tapeboard's breaking-news terminal — a live feed from major wires and financial press with source-category filters, ticker filtering, AI digest on Pro, real-time push for paid users, a free Audio headlines toggle that reads new breaking headlines aloud through your browser, and desktop notifications on high-impact headlines.

News is the breaking-news terminal. A live feed from major wires and financial press on the left; a sector-performance strip and mini-heatmap on the right (Pro+). Paid users get real-time push of articles as they hit the feed; free users see a 5-minute poll fallback. A free Audio headlines toggle reads new breaking-news headlines aloud through your browser (text-to-speech) as they arrive — no extra cost, works in browsers that support it. Beyond this surface, breaking-news desktop notifications go to opted-in users for high-impact catalysts every 5 minutes, 24/7.

What it is

A deduplicated news aggregator spanning multiple wire and financial-press sources. Articles dedupe on canonical URL (tracking params stripped — utm_*, mc_cid, mc_eid, etc.). A spam filter drops generic "stocks moving today" listicles and low-quality syndicated fragments.

Per-ticker news uses the same feed scoped to a symbol — surfaced by the Research page's News tab and by the news-row ticker filter here.

Breaking-news push is a separate channel: every 5 minutes it scans the last 5 minutes of company news, filters to a curated HIGH-impact keyword set, and notifies every user watching the affected ticker. Quiet hours, per-user daily caps, and cross-channel dedup are all enforced before anything is sent.

When to use it

When you want the firehose. Open /news in a panel during the open, flip on Audio headlines so new breaking items read themselves aloud while you watch charts, filter to a single ticker when a name moves and you want the catalyst.

!News feed with the Audio headlines toggle enabled in the feed toolbar The sector-performance strip on the right shows which S&P sectors are leading the tape today — click any sector to scope the feed to that sector's bellwether ticker. The mini-heatmap visualizes the same data across timeframes (Today / 1W / 1M / 3M / YTD).

Open it

  • Path: /news
  • Shortcut: none — accessible from the sidebar
  • Tier-gate: Free sees the breaking news feed without the right-rail panels (sector performance and mini-heatmap). Pro unlocks the right rail, real-time push (updating every 30s during market hours, 60s when closed), and the AI news digest (metered at 10/day on Pro). Free users refresh on a 5-minute poll

How to use it

  1. Open /news. The breaking news feed renders on the left. On desktop and tablet, the sector-performance strip and mini-heatmap render on the right (Pro+). On mobile, the sector strip slides under the page header in a horizontal scroll.
  2. Use the source-category filter at the top of the feed to scope by outlet category (e.g., All, Wires, Financial Press, Specialty).
  3. Use the search box to substring-match headlines.
  4. Click a ticker tag inside any news row to filter the feed to that symbol. Click the filter chip at the top to clear.
  5. Toggle Audio headlines (the speaker icon) to have your browser read new breaking-tagged headlines aloud as they arrive (those published within the last 2 hours). It's free and runs entirely in your browser's text-to-speech; the page must have focus for audio to play, and it only works in browsers that support speech output.
  6. Open the AI Digest panel (Pro+) for a summarized rollup of the active feed.
  7. Click any sector card on the right rail to scope the feed to that sector's primary ticker (e.g. XLK for tech, XLF for financials).

Limits

  • Free: 10-article cap on the general feed; 5 per-ticker on Research News; right-rail panels paywalled; real-time push disabled, 5-minute poll only
  • Pro: full feed depth, real-time push, right-rail panels; AI digest metered at 10/day
  • Terminal: unlimited, including AI digest
  • Spam filter: blocks known low-quality syndicators outright; drops listicle headlines ("these stocks are gapping", "X joins Y and other big gainers", etc.)
  • Source coverage spans major wires and financial press; more outlets are added over time
  • Article retention: up to 100 articles in view; older ones fall off as new push arrives
  • Per-ticker feed: last 7 days of company news. Older articles not surfaced
  • Breaking-news push: every 5 minutes 24/7, but quiet hours and per-user daily caps apply before anything is sent — see Alerts
  • Audio headlines: free, but uses your browser's built-in text-to-speech — needs page focus, only works in browsers that support speech output, and the voice/rate aren't user-configurable. Nothing is sent to a paid service; the speech is generated locally by your browser
  • Breaking-news push uses a keyword set, not NLP/sentiment — it will miss subtle catalysts and occasionally fire on benign keyword matches

Troubleshooting

Feed shows the same articles for 10 minutes. Real-time push didn't connect (paid only) or you're on Free with the 5-min poll. Reload to re-establish the live connection; on Free, the poll is fixed at 5 minutes.

Audio headlines is silent after I enable it. Browsers gate speech output on user interaction — click anywhere on the page once after toggling it on, then wait for the next breaking article (it only reads newly arriving breaking items, not the ones already on screen). If still silent, check that your browser supports text-to-speech and that your operating system has a voice installed.

§ERR / BREAKING_NEWS · feed unavailable. All news sources were temporarily unreachable. Wait a minute and retry — the feed typically recovers on its own within a few minutes.

Ticker tag in a news row is wrong. Source tagging is occasionally aggressive — feeds tag every public name mentioned, not just the subject. Use the headline as truth, tags as a filter convenience.

I'm watching NVDA and the FDA push fired for an unrelated headline. Push dedup is per-headline-per-hour; if NVDA was cross-tagged in an article whose headline matched fda approves, the push fires. Open the article to confirm context.

Does Audio headlines cost anything or need a paid tier. No — Audio headlines is free on every tier. It uses your browser's built-in text-to-speech to read new breaking headlines aloud, so there's no metered cost and nothing is sent to a paid service. The only requirement is a browser that supports speech output.

Audio headlines reads some headlines but skips others. By design it only speaks newly arriving breaking-tagged items (published within the last 2 hours) while the toggle is on and the page has focus. Older articles, items already on screen when you enabled it, and non-breaking headlines aren't read aloud.
