Scanner

The Tapeboard Scanner is a real-time, multi-panel stock scanner with 44 presets across six categories, natural-language filters, advanced filter chaining (including short-interest, borrow-fee, and squeeze-score minimums), session-aware auto-rotating layouts, a 500-symbol streaming universe, a workspace of addable cockpit panels — Level 2 order book, time & sales, depth chart, quote, live positions, and a live alert feed — plus the sign-in-required Squeeze Leaderboard with its Squeeze Alerts strip.

The Tapeboard Scanner runs a multi-panel grid of real-time presets — gappers, RVOL spikes, 52-week highs, unusual volume, premarket movers, top losers — over a streaming universe of US equities. Rows update live; click any ticker and the chart loads inline below the grid. Beyond the scanner grid, the workspace lets you bolt on cockpit panels — Level 2 order book, time & sales tape, depth chart, quote, and an alert feed — so a single screen covers find-it, watch-it, and drill-into-it.

<!-- !Anonymous scanner — a row mid green/red price tick flash with the STALE — LAST CLOSE chip -->

A 2×1 / 2×2 / 3×2 grid of independent scanner panels, each running a preset (top-gainers, pre-market-gap-up, unusual-volume, near-52w-high, etc.) over the same shared streaming universe — raised from 200 to 500 symbols (2026-07-11). Panels are drag-reorderable. A green pulse on a row means it just entered the panel; a fade-out means it dropped out. Rows flash green or red on every price change — including the anonymous 15-minute-delayed view, so the scanner reads as live even before you sign in. The status bar at the top shows the active session (Pre-Market / Market Open / After Hours / Market Closed), the total symbols in the universe, and the seconds since the last refresh. When the market is closed and the price is yesterday's, rows carry a STALE — LAST CLOSE chip so the delay is labeled, not hidden.

When to use it

Every session. Pre-market for gappers and overnight news reactions, the open for ORB candidates and RVOL spikes, mid-day for continuation setups, power hour for closing-print squeezes. Most sessions start here.

Open it

  • Path: /scanner
  • Shortcut: ⌘2
  • Tier-gate: The free tier shows ONE live scanner panel with full rows + any other panels rendering with the TOP mover visible but the rows below blurred ("fog of war"). The upgrade CTA sits on the fog — logged-out visitors see "Sign up for a free 7-day Pro trial", free users see "Subscribe to Pro for the full list". Pro+ sees every panel fully live with no fogs. The grid workspace (custom layouts, unlimited panels, addable cockpit panels), the full preset library, natural-language scans, audio alerts, and the multi-chart trading-view mode unlock on Pro ($39/mo) — also granted in full during the 7-day Pro trial. Logged-out (anonymous) visitors see the live panel as a 15-minute-delayed feed; signed-in free users see the live panel as real-time. Trial + Pro are always real-time across all panels.`

Scanner grid + layouts

The scanner layout toolbar — 2x1, 2x2 and 3x2 grid selectors with the session-preset row set to AUTO
The scanner layout toolbar — 2x1, 2x2 and 3x2 grid selectors with the session-preset row set to AUTO

The grid renders in three densities — 2×1 (two panels), 2×2 (four), 3×2 (six). Default for new accounts is 3×2. Drag any panel header to reorder. Press Space to pause the live feed and study a frozen snapshot; press it again to resume.

Session-aware layout presets. Instead of hand-arranging panels, pick a layout preset that loads a curated four-panel set tuned to a session or style:

PresetPanels it loads
pre-marketPre-Market Gap Up · Pre-Market Gap Down · Unusual Volume · Low Float Runners
market-openHOD Momentum · Top Gainers · Top Losers · Unusual Volume
power-hourPower Hour Surge · HOD Momentum · Unusual Volume · High Short Interest Squeeze
swing-tradingNear 52-Week High · Oversold (RSI<30) · Sector Momentum · Large Cap Movers
penny-stocksPenny Stock Movers · Low Float Runners · Volume Spike · Small Cap Rockets
after-hoursAfter-Hours Movers · Earnings Movers · Top Gainers · Unusual Volume

Set the layout preset to auto and Tapeboard rotates the panel set by clock: pre-market from 4:00 AM ET, market-open 9:30–10:30, the default mix through the day, power-hour from 3:00 PM, and after-hours after the close. The rotation only fires when the session actually changes, so it never stomps panels you've manually arranged mid-session.

Scan presets

A panel-header preset dropdown open, scans grouped under the Momentum and Gappers category heading
A panel-header preset dropdown open, scans grouped under the Momentum and Gappers category heading

Click any panel header to swap its preset. The dropdown groups all 44 presets into six categories. Each preset is a fixed filter+sort spec — e.g. pre-market-runners is gap >4% AND RVOL >5 AND float <20M AND price $1–$20, sorted by gap descending.

  • Momentum & Gappers (12)pre-market-gap-up, pre-market-gap-down, pre-market-runners, top-gainers, top-losers, hod-momentum, morning-momentum, running-up, power-hour-surge, float-rotation, the classic gap-and-go (premarket gap >5% on sub-50M float with 3x+ RVOL), and momentum-now (2026-07-11 — sorted by a live 5-minute price-momentum score off the streaming feed, refreshed every few seconds; a free preset, not Pro-gated).
  • Volume-Based (5)unusual-volume (>2x average), relative-volume (>3x), volume-spike (3x+ in the last 5 minutes), high-volume-breakout, most-active (highest absolute volume).
  • Price Action & Technicals (9)near-52w-high, near-52w-low, oversold-rsi (RSI-14 <30), overbought-rsi (RSI-14 >70), above-vwap, vwap-reclaim, opening-range-breakout, reversal-candidates, red-to-green.
  • Market Cap Specific (6)large-cap-movers (>$10B), mid-cap-movers ($2B–$10B), small-cap-rockets (<$2B, >5%), penny-stocks (sub-$5), sub-dollar-runners (under $1, >20%, 5M+ volume — catches small-cap rips most scanners filter out), and microcap-momentum (<$300M cap, $1–$10, float ≤15M shares, 3x+ RVOL and ≥5% move).
  • Specialty (8)sector-momentum (with a sector picker), low-float-runners, after-hours-movers, breaking-news-movers, high-short-interest-squeeze, ipo-watch, former-runners, and halt-resume (currently/recently halted — the volatility-on-resume setup).
  • Bearish & Shorts (4)hod-breakdown, high-short-interest (>10% of float), gap-down (>3% gap down), unusual-volume-losers.

Free vs Pro presets. Free users can change which preset any panel runs — including the panels under the fog. Switching which panel is your "live" (fully-visible) panel locks in for 5 minutes per change (an anti-cycle cooldown: without it you could rotate which panel is live as a way to dodge the fog). The free curated-focus set: top-gainers, top-losers, most-active, unusual-volume, and momentum-now — the live scanner preview panel for logged-out visitors + Momentum Now as the free top-funnel "feels alive" hook. The rest — including large-cap-movers, gap-and-go, pre-market-runners, relative-volume, near-52w-high, near-52w-low, plus breakouts, squeezes, fundamental and bearish scans — unlock on Pro and during the trial.

Workspace panels

The grid is a workspace, not just a scanner. The Add Panel menu drops cockpit panels alongside scanner panels so one screen covers the whole loop. The grid workspace itself is Pro; Pro caps at 8 panels total, Terminal is unlimited. The Add Panel menu groups items under SCANNERS · CHARTS · INFO · TOOLS.

Level 2 / Order Book

The Level 2 order book — green bid ladder and red ask ladder with MMID, size, mid price and live spread
The Level 2 order book — green bid ladder and red ask ladder with MMID, size, mid price and live spread

A live market-depth ladder for the selected ticker. Bids stack in green, asks in red, each row showing MMID (the market participant), Size, and depth bars sized to the largest level on each side. Between the two ladders it prints the mid price and the absolute + percentage spread. The book streams live; if no Level 2 data arrives within ~8 seconds it shows a "no data" state rather than spinning. Viewing the book is Pro (and the trial) as of 2026-06-03 — Pro, Terminal, and admin all see it. Terminal keeps the *execution* fence: trading against the book via the simulator's L2 walk-book fills stays Terminal-only.

Time & Sales

The time and sales tape — Time, Price, Size, Exch and Side columns with green buy and red sell prints
The time and sales tape — Time, Price, Size, Exch and Side columns with green buy and red sell prints

The raw print tape. Columns: Time · Price · Size · Exch · Side. Each print is colored by uptick/downtick — a print above the prior trade is tagged a buy (green), below is a sell (red), equal carries the prior side. Streams live for the active ticker only, so a scanner mover selected elsewhere won't leak into this tape. Viewing the tape is Pro and included in the trial; the paywall copy reads "Time & Sales is included with Pro ($39/mo) and the free trial."

Depth Chart

The depth chart — cumulative green bid wall and red ask wall meeting at the spread
The depth chart — cumulative green bid wall and red ask wall meeting at the spread

A visualization of cumulative order-book depth: the green wall is summed bid size from the inside out, the red wall is summed ask size, and they meet at the spread. It reads the same live Level 2 data as the order book, so it's the at-a-glance version of where the size sits. Viewing the depth chart is Pro — Pro, trial, Terminal, and admin all see it.

Quote

The quote panel — last price, change, day range and key metrics with an inline ticker search
The quote panel — last price, change, day range and key metrics with an inline ticker search

A compact ticker dashboard: last price, absolute and percent change, day range, volume, and key metrics, with an inline search to retarget the panel. It also tracks security-status changes (e.g. overnight/extended) from the live stream. The Quote panel is free — no tier gate — so it pairs with the free scanner out of the box.

Alert feed

The alert feed — Time, Symbol, Price, %Chg, RVol and Gap% rows tagged NEW as movers trigger
The alert feed — Time, Symbol, Price, %Chg, RVol and Gap% rows tagged NEW as movers trigger

A rolling log of everything that just hit a scanner trigger, newest on top. Columns: Time · Symbol · Price · %Chg · RVol · Gap%. New entries slide in and flash; halt-resume events get a yellow RESUMED tag, regular triggers a green NEW tag. Click a row to select the symbol across linked panels (on mobile it routes to Research). A mute toggle silences its audio and Clear wipes the visible feed. Outside market hours it shows a session-aware "Scanner alerts resume when the tape reopens" state instead of a misleading "waiting" spinner. (The Add Panel menu also lists Alerts — the rule-based price/volume alert manager covered in Alerts — distinct from this scanner-trigger feed.)

Live Positions

Mirrors your paper-trading Positions tab from the Simulator inline in the scanner grid — Symbol, Side, Type, Shares, Avg Entry, Last, Mkt Value, and Unreal P&L, reading the same data so the two views can never disagree. Since 2026-07-11 every row also carries an [ AI: BREAK IT DOWN ] icon button for an instant "why is this moving?" read — see Movers → AI: Break It Down.

Squeeze Leaderboard

A dedicated, sign-in-required page at /scanner/squeeze — a sortable, cross-ticker ranking by short-squeeze score, separate from the scanner grid above. It's free on every signed-in tier (no Pro gate on the page itself).

The Squeeze Leaderboard — ranked table with score, SI %float, borrow fee, days-to-cover, float utilization and 5-day momentum, each row carrying an AI: BREAK IT DOWN button
The Squeeze Leaderboard — ranked table with score, SI %float, borrow fee, days-to-cover, float utilization and 5-day momentum, each row carrying an AI: BREAK IT DOWN button

The table. Rank, symbol, score, a 5-day score delta, SI % of float, days-to-cover, float utilization, borrow-fee rate, 5-day momentum, price, and market cap, sortable by any column, filterable by row count (50 / 100 / 250 / 500), a minimum-market-cap floor, sector, and an SHO-only toggle (limits to names on the settlement-day short-volume-ratio streak). An include-risky toggle surfaces low-data rows (R/S survivors, sub-microcaps, illiquid names) the default quality gate hides. Each row carries the same [ AI: BREAK IT DOWN ] icon button documented on Movers — the leaderboard's top names are part of the precomputed set, so their breakdowns open instantly. On mobile the table becomes a card list.

Squeeze Alerts strip (2026-07-10). When any name on the board is actively igniting — day change ≥ +7% *and* fuel present (short interest ≥ 10%, or the daily short-volume ratio ≥ 0.6, or borrow fee ≥ 20%), confirmed by RVOL ≥ 3× — it appears as a compact badge in a banner strip above the table, so a building squeeze surfaces before it's already printed +25% and is fait accompli. Click a badge to jump to that name's Research page. The strip only renders when at least one name is currently igniting; the ignition composite is a data flag, not a signal to trade — same information-not-advice framing as everywhere else AI touches the tape.

The Squeeze Leaderboard and the scanner grid's Short Int % column now read the same FINRA + Yahoo composite short-interest data (converged 2026-07-10, closing a prior divergence where the two pages could quote different numbers for the same ticker) — sourced from a full FINRA consolidated short-interest ingest of roughly 22,000 names, with a live Schwab field used only as a fallback for symbols that ingest hasn't seen yet (a recent IPO or an obscure ticker).

Squeeze-score column hover (2026-08-11). On the scanner grid, hovering the SQZ column surfaces a tooltip with yesterday's close + today's percent change from that close, plus the SI %float + days-to-cover when available. This is the missing interpretive context for the score — a high score on a ticker that's already up 40% from yesterday is a squeeze that fired; the same high score on a ticker barely moved is a setup that hasn't gone off yet.

Advanced filters

The Advanced Filters drawer — RSI min/max, P/E min/max, distance-from-52-week-high selector, average-volume floor, and the short-interest / borrow-fee / squeeze-score minimums
The Advanced Filters drawer — RSI min/max, P/E min/max, distance-from-52-week-high selector, average-volume floor, and the short-interest / borrow-fee / squeeze-score minimums

The ADVANCED FILTERS toggle chains extra constraints on top of whatever the active preset already returned — it narrows, never broadens, and runs client-side over the panel's existing result set:

FilterRange / options
RSImin and/or max, 0–100 (RSI-14)
P/E RATIOmin and/or max
DIST FROM 52W HIGHAny / within 5% / within 10% / within 20%
AVG VOLUME MINshares floor
SHORT INT % MINshort interest as a % of float, minimum
BORROW FEE % MINannualized borrow-fee minimum
SQUEEZE SCORE MIN0–100 minimum on the short-squeeze score

The short-interest, borrow-fee, and squeeze-score filters (and their matching optional columns — Short Int %, Borrow Fee %, Squeeze Score, toggled on from the column picker) only cover high-short-interest names (the FINRA + IBKR short-interest universe), the same sparse coverage the Squeeze Leaderboard runs on. They narrow a scan to covered names; everything else shows .

Replay

Hit REPLAY to study a past session. Pick a date (any prior trading day) and a time in ET (defaults to 09:35), and the scanner re-runs the active preset against that historical snapshot. Replay only covers dates whose sessions have been ingested into the snapshot store; the backfill runs nightly, so pick a date at least 24 hours old. Coverage is partial before April 2026.

Natural-language scan (Pro)

When you're on Pro or the trial, a natural-language input appears below the toolbar: describe what you want ("low-float biotechs up 10% on 5x volume") and it parses the phrase into a filter spec. If it can't parse, it prompts you to be more specific. It's hidden entirely in trading-view mode.

How to use it

  1. Pick a layout from the toolbar — 2×1, 2×2, or 3×2. New accounts default to 3×2.
  2. Click any panel header to swap its preset. The dropdown groups all 44 presets by intent — momentum, volume, price-action, market-cap, specialty, bearish. Momentum Now (Free) rides the live 5-minute momentum tape.
  3. Set the layout preset to a session (pre-market, market-open, power-hour, swing-trading, penny-stocks, after-hours) or to auto to let Tapeboard rotate panels by the clock.
  4. Click any row to dock the chart inline below the grid. Press F to fullscreen, Esc to close, R to jump to that ticker's Research page.
  5. Open the ADVANCED FILTERS drawer to chain RSI range, P/E range, distance-from-52-week-high, an average-volume floor, and (for covered names) short-interest, borrow-fee, and squeeze-score minimums on top of the active preset.
  6. Add cockpit panels with Add Panel — drop a Level 2 order book, a time & sales tape, a depth chart, a quote, Live Positions, or an alert feed beside your scanners.
  7. On Pro, type a plain-English query into the natural-language box to build an ad-hoc scan without picking a preset.
  8. Hit REPLAY, choose a prior trading day and an ET time, and re-run the active preset against that historical snapshot.
  9. Drag panel headers to reorder; press Space to pause the live feed when rows are mutating too fast to read.
  10. Save your arrangement as a workspace and reload it with a hotkey next session.
  11. Open the Squeeze Leaderboard at /scanner/squeeze to rank every covered name by squeeze score, watch the Squeeze Alerts strip for names actively igniting, and tap [ AI: BREAK IT DOWN ] on a row for an instant read.

Fields

Standard columns on every preset:

SYMBOLTicker, click to dock the chart
PRICELast trade price
CHGAbsolute price change vs prior close
CHG%Percent change vs prior close
VOLCumulative session volume
RVOLRelative volume vs 30-day average — see /glossary/relative-volume

MKT CAPMarket cap
SECTORGICS sector
SPARKLINEIntraday mini-chart, when the column-set permits

Session-specific presets surface extra columns — GAP%, PREMKT, EXT (extended-hours price/volume), RSI, TYP PX (HLC/3 typical-price proxy — true VWAP needs full intraday volume, which the scanner's snapshot feed doesn't carry), 52W HIGH/LOW, and 5MIN SPIKE — depending on the preset.

Three more columns toggle on from the panel's column picker regardless of preset: Short Int %, Borrow Fee %, and Squeeze Score — the same short-interest data the Squeeze Leaderboard runs on, sparse by nature (covered names only, elsewhere).

The 7-day Pro trial grants the full Pro feature set, including L2, time & sales, and depth viewing.

Limits

  • Free tier: 3 scanner panels, 5 curated presets (including Momentum Now), no grid workspace, no natural-language scans, no trading-view mode.
  • Pro caps the grid workspace at 8 panels total; Terminal is unlimited.
  • Scanner data refreshes live; the universe-status row shows seconds since the last batch.
  • Replay only works for dates with completed, ingested sessions — partial coverage before April 2026.
  • Advanced filters apply over the panel's existing result set — they narrow, not broaden.
  • Level 2 viewing needs a live book; if no Level 2 data arrives within ~8 seconds the order book and depth chart show a "no data" state.

Troubleshooting

The grid is empty even though the market is open. The universe refreshes in batches — check the status bar for an Updated 30s ago stamp. If it's stale by more than a minute, hard-refresh the page; the live connection may have dropped.

Rows are blinking and reordering too fast to read. Press Space to pause. The grid freezes on the current snapshot until you press Space again.

A panel says "Multi-Panel Scanner: Upgrade to Pro." You're on Free and you've added a fourth panel. Free is capped at three; remove a panel or upgrade.

The Order Book or Time & Sales panel shows an upgrade prompt. Viewing the book and tape is Pro (and the 7-day trial). Upgrade to Pro ($39/mo) or start the trial; Terminal also includes them plus trading against the book.

The Order Book / Depth Chart says "no data" but the ticker is liquid. Level 2 only streams during market hours and only for symbols in the book feed. If nothing arrives within ~8 seconds the panel stops waiting — reselect the ticker, or check that the market is open.

Time & Sales is empty or shows another ticker's prints. The tape follows the panel's selected ticker only. Click a symbol to retarget it; outside market hours the tape pauses until the open.

REPLAY returns zero results for a recent date. The replay snapshot for that session may not have ingested yet — backfill runs nightly. Pick a date at least 24 hours old.

The natural-language box says "Couldn't parse that." Be more specific — name a direction, a percentage, and a volume or float condition (e.g. "low float under 10M up 8% on 4x volume"). The natural-language scan is Pro-only and hidden in trading-view mode.

Advanced filters returned nothing. They narrow the active preset's results — if the preset already returned a tight set, stacking RSI + P/E + 52-week-distance can zero it out. Loosen one constraint at a time.
