What a dark pool tracker can and cannot see

A tracker can see

  • Which dark pools (alternative trading systems) reported your ticker in the latest FINRA weekly file, and how many shares and trades each one carried
  • The dark pool share of a ticker's FINRA-reported off-exchange volume, and the 8-week trend per ticker
  • Which venues lead: Intelligent Cross, UBS ATS, Sigma X2 and the rest of the roughly 34 active FINRA-reporting dark pools

No tracker can see

  • Live dark pool prints. There is no live per-print ATS feed at retail; anyone promising one is overstating their data source
  • Prices, trade sizes, or whether the volume was buying or selling. The FINRA weekly file carries share counts and trade counts only
  • Dark pools' share of total market volume. FINRA's file covers off-exchange volume only, so we never present it as a share of the whole tape

What we track, and when. Tapeboard publishes the FINRA OTC Transparency weekly file for hundreds of tracked tickers, frozen per week: per-ticker dark pool volume, per dark pool, plus the non-ATS off-exchange channel. It is weekly FINRA data, published about 2.5 weeks after the week ends for large caps (NMS Tier 1), about 4.5 weeks for smaller caps. Nothing fresher exists until FINRA publishes the next week, and we state the lag plainly instead of dressing delayed data up as live.

What is a dark pool tracker?

A tool that shows which dark pools (alternative trading systems) reported volume in a ticker, and how much. An honest one runs on FINRA's weekly ATS transparency file, because that is the only dark pool data that exists at retail. This tracker shows the latest published FINRA week per ticker and per dark pool, with the publication lag stated on every view.

Where can I see dark pool prints?

Not live, and not at retail. Dark pool trades report to FINRA, which publishes them aggregated per week, on a delay. The closest live signal is unusual volume on the lit exchanges, which is why our dark pool scanner page explains that proxy honestly. The weekly FINRA archive here is the real record.

How current is the data on this page?

Weekly FINRA data, published about 2.5 weeks after the week ends for large caps (NMS Tier 1), about 4.5 weeks for smaller caps. Each table states the exact FINRA week it shows and the date FINRA first published that week's file. These are the newest weekly numbers FINRA has published, not a live feed.

Does heavy dark pool volume mean big investors are buying?

No. Dark pool volume is hidden liquidity: it says where institutions chose to trade away from the lit exchanges, nothing about direction. FINRA reports share counts and trade counts, not prices, sizes, or sides. A week of heavy dark pool volume can accompany accumulation, distribution, or two-sided market making.
