The Chande Momentum Oscillator (CMO) is a technical momentum indicator that measures the ratio of cumulative gains to cumulative losses over a specified period to identify overbought and oversold conditions. Created by Tushar Chande, the CMO oscillates between +100 and -100. Unlike the Relative Strength Index (RSI), which uses smoothed averages of gains and losses, the CMO calculates the direct difference between the sum of gains and the sum of losses, dividing that figure by the total absolute price movement. This raw calculation makes the CMO more volatile and responsive to sudden price shocks.
How the Chande Momentum Oscillator is Calculated
The standard lookback period for the CMO is 14 days. The calculation isolates the price change from the previous close for each period, separates the positive changes from the negative changes, and computes a momentum ratio.
1. Sum of Gains (SG) = Sum of all positive price changes over the 14 periods
2. Sum of Losses (SL) = Sum of all negative price changes over the 14 periods (expressed as a positive absolute value)
3. CMO = [(SG - SL) / (SG + SL)] × 100
If a stock has zero volatility over the 14-day window, the denominator equals zero, making the CMO undefined. The numerator (SG - SL) dictates the directional momentum, while the denominator normalizes the output to a -100 to +100 scale.
Worked Example
Consider TSLA over a 14-day trading window. During this period, TSLA experiences 8 up days generating a Sum of Gains of $25, and 6 down days generating a Sum of Losses of $10.
Applying the formula: CMO = [($25 - $10) / ($25 + $10)] × 100
CMO = [$15 / $35] × 100 = 42.86.
A CMO reading of 42.86 indicates strong bullish momentum. Traders using the CMO consider readings above +50 as overbought and readings below -50 as oversold. TSLA is nearing overbought territory, prompting momentum traders to tighten stop losses or prepare for a mean-reversion trade.
When Traders Use It
Traders use the CMO to spot extreme momentum conditions and trend exhaustion. Because the indicator is unsmoothed, it generates highly responsive signals. Buy signals trigger when the CMO crosses above -50, and sell signals trigger when it crosses below +50. Traders also use the 0 line as a trend filter: holding long positions only when the CMO is above 0 and short positions when it is below 0. The CMO is highly effective for identifying bullish or bearish divergences where price makes a new extreme but the oscillator fails to confirm it.
Limitations and Common Misconceptions
The CMO's lack of smoothing makes it highly susceptible to market noise, generating false signals during choppy, sideways markets. Traders frequently pair the CMO with a moving average to filter out errant oscillations.
A common misconception is that the CMO and RSI are interchangeable. While both measure momentum, the RSI uses an exponential moving average calculation that smooths out outlier days, while the CMO weights recent volatility more heavily. The CMO will reach its extremes faster than the RSI, making it better for quick scalps but worse for holding through multi-week trends.
