How to Find Short Squeeze Stocks — The 5 Signals That Actually Matter

Every retail trader has seen the headlines: GME, AMC, BBBY. What gets missed is that the short-interest number alone — the one most free screeners surface — is a lagging, half-truth signal. A real squeeze setup needs four or five conditions stacked at once. Here's what each signal means, why it matters, and how to scan them together instead of one at a time.
1) Short interest as % of float — above 20% is high, above 30% is squeeze territory. 2) Days to cover (short interest ÷ avg daily volume) — above 5 means the shorts can't exit quickly. 3) IBKR borrow fee — above 50% APR means brokers are charging shorts dearly to hold; above 100% is a stress signal. 4) Float utilization — above 90% means there's almost no inventory left to borrow, so new shorts can't pile in and existing shorts can't add. 5) Recent momentum (5-day return, RSI) — the squeeze fuse is lit when price breaks resistance on volume; momentum confirms shorts are starting to cover.
High short interest with low borrow fee = shorts are comfortable, no pressure. High borrow fee with weak momentum = the trade is expensive but isn't moving. High float utilization with flat days-to-cover = shorts are well-positioned, no squeeze risk. The setup is a composite — you need three or four of the five firing on the same name. Three failure modes worth knowing. (a) A stock at 60% short interest but $0.10/share is a low-float pump candidate, not a squeeze — they don't move the same way. Filter for >$1.00 price floor. (b) Days-to-cover spikes when volume drops, not when shorts pile in — look at the absolute short-interest figure too. (c) Borrow fees can also signal hard-to-borrow IPO/SPAC lockups unrelated to shorting pressure — cross-check against the float-utilization.

Above 20% of float is considered high; above 30% is squeeze territory. Most US stocks sit between 1-5%. Context matters: a 25% short on a $0.50 float-pumper means something very different from 25% on a large-cap.
