What is the Balance of Power Indicator?
The Balance of Power (BoP) is a technical momentum oscillator that measures the degree to which buyers or sellers control the price action of an asset during a specific period. Developed by Don Worden, the indicator quantifies the ongoing battle between bulls and bears by evaluating where the closing price settles in relation to the period's high and low extremes. A positive BoP value indicates that buyers dominated the session, while a negative value indicates that sellers held control. The indicator oscillates around a zero line, providing traders with a clear visual representation of market control and potential shifts in momentum before they become apparent in price alone.
How it's calculated / identified
The Balance of Power formula calculates the distance of the close from the midpoint of the period's range, scaled by the total range. The calculation requires three data points: the period high, the period low, and the closing price.
BoP = (Close - Open) / (High - Low)
In practical charting applications, the raw BoP value is smoothed using an exponential moving average (EMA) to filter out noise and generate tradeable signals. A common smoothing length is 14 periods. When the smoothed BoP crosses above zero, buyers are taking control. When it crosses below zero, sellers are taking control. Divergences between the BoP and price action—such as price making higher highs while BoP makes lower highs—signal a weakening of the prevailing trend.
Worked example
Consider a daily chart of NVDA during a strong uptrend. On a given day, the stock opens at $840, drops to an intraday low of $830, rallies to a high of $860, and closes at $855.
Applying the formula:
- BoP = ($855 - $840) / ($860 - $830)
- BoP = $15 / $30 = 0.50
A reading of 0.50 indicates strong bullish control, as the stock closed in the upper half of its daily range above the open. If a trader applies a 14-day EMA to these daily BoP values and the EMA crosses above the zero line, it confirms a broader shift toward bullish momentum. Conversely, if NVDA continues to make higher highs but the BoP EMA begins to roll over and print lower highs, it warns that buying pressure is exhausting despite the rising price.
When traders use it
Traders deploy the Balance of Power indicator to confirm the direction of a trend and pinpoint entry and exit points. It is primarily used as a trend-confirmation tool alongside moving averages or price structure. Traders look for zero-line crossovers as early signals of trend reversals. Furthermore, BoP is highly effective for identifying divergences. If a stock is in a downtrend but the BoP begins printing higher lows, traders anticipate a bullish reversal and position long, using the zero-line cross as the trigger to execute the trade.
Limitations / common misconceptions
The primary limitation of the BoP indicator is its failure to account with gaps. Because the formula relies on the (Close - Open) calculation divided by the (High - Low), a stock that gaps up significantly but closes lower on the day will show negative BoP, obscuring the bullish overnight pressure. Furthermore, in highly compressed markets where the High and Low are nearly identical, the denominator approaches zero, causing erratic spikes in the indicator. A common misconception is that BoP measures volume; it measures purely price action. Traders must pair BoP with volume analysis or what-is-on-balance-volume to validate the strength of the buying or selling pressure.
